Marshal’s Top 7 Films of 2012

2012 has been a phenomenal year for movies. Despite not being able to watch every worthy film I still had an excessively long list from the movies I was fortunate to watch. With that being said, I would like to reiterate that the movies on this list are the movies that I personally enjoyed the most out of the ones that I saw this year.

Before jumping into the list I would recommend checking out the video below. Kees van Dijkhuizen Jr. makes these amazing compilations each year of all of the films that have come out and it makes for a perfect reminder of all of the gems that we got in 2012.

And with that let’s move onto the list!

7. The Cabin in the Woods

At the bottom of my list sits Cabin in the Woods. Cabin in the Woods while at a quick glance looks like any other teen horror flick is actually more of a self aware mockery of the genre. You come into this movie easily foreseeing what is going to happen next and then it breaks the format and your mind starts to get blown. The movie has a really fun cast and is written by Joss Whedon and while arguably not a horror film it is easily one of new favorites of the genre.

6. Skyfall

Prior to this year I had not been sold on Daniel Craig as Bond. Casino Royale was fun but not spectacular and I honestly can’t even remember anything from Quantum of Solace. Let’s just say that after Skyfall I am now all on board. Skyfall was hands down one of my favorite Bond films ever. It found that perfect mix of old Bond style and that new dark and grittier tone. On top of that we get Javier Bardem playing an absolutely amazing Bond villain and the entire film just looks stunning. I can now safely say that I cannot wait for Craig’s next venture with the character.

5. Life of Pi

While I loved the book, movie adaptations more often than not miss the mark. That definitely was not the case here. Life of Pi was one of those books no one thought could be made into a movie due to major lack of dialogue and the fact that the majority of the film takes place with Pi by himself in the middle of the ocean with a tiger. Despite these challenges Ang Lee was able to perfectly retell this fantastic story while still maintaining all of the magic that the book had.

4. Moonrise Kingdom

This year Wes Andersen presented us with another one of his loveable and quirky films and like the rest of them it was glorious. Moonrise Kingdom has one my favorite casts in a movie ever and each actor plays his or her respective character stunningly. While the film did have a lot of big names in regards to older actors the story was in fact one of two kids in love creating a nostalgic tale of that awkward and passionate young love. The more I find myself thinking back on this film the more I feel wrong putting it only at number four but there really are just a ton of amazing movies this year. You can read my full review of Moonrise Kingdom here!

3. The Dark Knight Rises

I know I am not alone in the belief that Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies are the best superhero films to date and this year we got to see the final installment of the trilogy. Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne is forced to once again take up the cowl as Gotham is threatened by Bane. While the Dark Knight and Ledger’s Joker were tough act to follow, we are given a movie which does so swimmingly and a villain who is absolutely terrifying. The term epic is thrown around way too loosely these days but this trilogy and especially its conclusion I feel are more than worthy of the term. You can read my full review of the film here!

2. The Grey

Anyone who is curious why the movie about Liam Neeson punching wolves made it this high on the list clearly has not seen this movie. This isn’t just an action movie about men fighting wolves but it was the single most though provoking film I saw this year. The film takes a look at the nature of life and death while simultaneously providing an adrenaline rush of a thriller. Liam Neeson stars and delivers an absolutely stunning performance due to similarities between his character and himself. Hands down my new favorite Liam Neeson film and for the vast majority of the year the Grey sat in my number one spot.

1. Django Unchained

The reason this list took so long to come out was because I just had to wait for Django Unchained to be released. I am so glad I waited. Django Unchained follows in the same revisionist footsteps that Inglorious Basterds took and provides a bit of an alternative take on history. Christoph Waltz and Jamie Foxx play one of the best duos I have seen in years and their performances are only rivaled by the villains of the films who are played by Samuel Jackson and Leonardo Dicaprio. The movie is just so emotive, exciting, fun, funny and an absolute thrill to watch. I just got to watch Django within these past few days and have yet to write a review for it and I am not sure if I will because despite all of my best efforts I have yet to find or think of a bad thing to say about it. If I were to write a review it would be less of a review and more of a rant about why it is so awesome. Django Unchained is hands down my number one movie of the year and one of my new favorites of all time.

Honorable Mentiones

The Avengers

Looper

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Power Cords Presents: Turok Week!

It’s summer, a time of year when I often find myself revisiting old franchises and old games. Since there’s not much on my radar as far as new releases come, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to go back and delve back into in one of my personal favorite franchises, Turok.

Turok has always been overlooked in a lot of ways – be it in games, comics, or even films, and that’s a shame. The premise for the entire franchise — a Native American warrior swept through time and space to a lost land populated by dinosaurs, savage tribes, mutant beasts, advanced technology and mystical beings  – seems like the perfect scenario for videogames, comics, and movies alike.

But due to things such as poor marketing, production delays and cancellations, and admittedly even some low-quality entries in the series, Turok has never quite found his place among the pantheon of comic book heroes he so justly deserves.

So, I’ve decided to do what I can to change that, and reach out to the power cords readers, filling you all in what the best comics and games in the series are, and show that Turok really is a great franchise.

You can expect new articles every day highlighting the best moments in the dinosaur hunter’s long life span, and where to start on your own journey to the Lost Land.

Let Turok Week begin!

Power Cords Update: Retro Reviews!

Hey readers, quick update,

So here at Power Cords, we do our best to stay up to date on the current games, movies, and media coming our way. But, as it’s probably rather evident in our coverage and reviews, there’s only so much a small handful of busy college students can do on their own. I’m sure you’ve noticed Marshal’s excellent reviews of movies from year’s past, so I (Brendan) have decided I will start doing the same thing for games from past generations in an effort to keep content flowing on the blog.

This new review format will effectively end our “Game/Movie of the Week” posts, giving us the ability to update more frequently, and write about games and movies whether we “like” them or not; Whenever we have a game, movie, album, board game, magic set, etc. that we wish to review, we’ll throw it up here, regardless of how many others we’ve done this week.

When it comes to games specifically, older titles will fall under the new “Retro Review” title. This is just to denote it’s an older game, it’ll still follow the same format for review that a recently released title would receive, and will be available in our reviews page once it’s up and running again.

Anyway, thanks for reading. You can check out our first Retro Review here, on A Link to the Past. Be on the lookout for more Retro Reviews in the near future!

Marshal’s Top 10 Animated Movies

With the recent release of The Pirates! Band of Misfits my mind has been wandering back to days spent watching Wallace and Gromit and classic Disney movies. Despite being a genre that gets overlooked and not taken seriously due to their tendency to be family oriented stories, animated movies make up some of my favorites of all time. Here is a list of my top ten favorites, many exhibiting the fact that they all aren’t geared solely at kids and if they are it is in no way a bad thing.

10. A Grand Day Out with Wallace and Gromit (1989)

Every time I find my self eating cheese and crackers I can’t stop myself from thinking about Wallace and Gromit and how I wouldn’t ever have to worry about running out of cheese again if I were able to get to the moon. Wallace and Gromit have always been one of my favorite duos so forgive me if this entry in the list is particularly subjective. This cheese loving team provides some incredibly witty and original stories and fantastically well done clay-animation. All of Wallace and Gromit’s early movies are fantastic (The Wrong Trousers just barely missed the list) but A Grand Day Out is too classic and too fantastic not to be on here.

9. Monster’s Inc. (2001)

This is another childhood favorite of mine. I remember seeing it in theaters and being amazed by the creative and heartfelt story and after watching it again recently still finding myself equally amazed. Pixar has always impressed me when it has come to telling original stories in a world of constantly regurgitated tales. Following and explaining the monsters that lurk in your closet and under your bed, Monster’s Inc. tells the story of two monsters, Mike and Sulley, as they go about their business and as they deal with the true monsters: humans. Every time I watch this movie I find my lip quivering when Sulley puts that last piece of wood in the door, no matter how hard I fight it. With the prequel, Monster’s University set for release sometime next year you can be sure to be seeing Mike and Sully’s face on the silver screen once again.

8. Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

Miyazaki is one of the masters of animation. The worlds he creates are always so spectacular and magical, and the setting for Howl’s Moving Castle is no different. Miyazaki isn’t just fantastic at creating worlds but his characters are always deep and strongly developed and he is well-known for writing strong female protagonists. Howl’s Moving Castle follows my all time favorite Miyazaki lead lady, Sofi, as she becomes cursed by a witch and how she seeks out Howl, a wizard powerful enough to set her free. While all of Miyazaki’s film are phenomenal, Howl’s Moving Castle has the perfect balance of action and magic and rich characters and story to satisfy all audiences while not disappointing a single one.

7. Up (2009)

So Pixar is notorious for it’s heart wrenching endings and Up is notorious for instead starting on such a terrible note. In those first ten minutes of the movie, Up tells one of the best love stories of our time, better than most love stories told over the course 2 hours or more. While telling such a beautiful short story it quickly comes to a heart breaking end, leading to the movie starting on a down note, perfectly setting the mood for the next scene. You really understand Carl as a character at this early point and why he is a such a grumpy old man making you feel attached to this character you normally wouldn’t. But from there it only goes up (no pun intended) and continues on to tell the story of an amazing adventure while also building some of best and richest characters Pixar has ever made.

6. The Animatrix (2003)

As I have written about before, The Matrix is one of the favorites of all time and The Animatrix is my favorite addition to the series. For those of you unfamiliar with the film, The Animatrix is a collection of nine short stories pertaining to the Matrix. All of these stories build on the already brilliant Matrix universe, expanding it by exploring the corners of the world that the trilogy doesn’t shed light on. Each short has a different artist which gives the collection a really eclectic style making it feel kind of unreal working perfectly with several of the stories underlying themes of existentialism. Regardless of your feelings towards the later 2 films in the series if you enjoyed the first movie you will definitely love The Animatrix.

5. Akira (1988)

This is a movie I only recently discovered while searching for the best sci-fi movies. While only recently discovered, it is one I immediately fell in love with. The story takes place in Neo-Tokyo and follows a bike gang as one of the members encounters a strange boy and soon discovers he has great power. This is one of those movies that the plot is hard to describe without making it sound weird or without giving away too much of the plot. All in all it is not only one of the best animated movies I have ever seen but also one of the better sci-fi ones as well. The movie is almost 25 years old now so some of the animation is a little cheesy but the story more than enough makes up for that.

4. Toy Story 3 (2010)

Everyone knew this was going to be on here somewhere. The Toy Story series is obviously a fantastic one but it has always held a special place in my generation’s heart. We watched Andy open Buzz as a kid at the same age and then heading off to college as he did the same. This emotional connection to the story only heightens the already phenomenal conclusion to a phenomenal series. I know there was so much doubt about this movie prior to its release, retreading on such a beloved series but after watching it all doubts immediately vanished. The fear that Toy Story 3 was simply an attempt for Pixar to make some more money was abolished after seeing the absolutely perfect conclusion to one of my all time favorite series. Many movies and series will have great endings but few have that absolutely perfect one that Toy Story 3 has.

3. Princess Mononoke (1997)

Hayao Miyazaki has an interesting approach to character design and the allotment of negative and positive qualities. He never tries to write a purely evil character or force but always tries to write characters with both positive and negative qualities. He makes the motivation of every antagonist clear leading to more believable and relatable characters, heroes and villains alike. This duality approach to design while apparent in all of his films is most clear in Princess Mononoke. This fantasy adventure story follows Ashitaka as he investigates the origins of a demon who attacked his village and alleviate the curse it laid upon him while it was at it. The film proceeds into a thought-provoking battle between the preservation of nature versus progress and industrialization with gods, demons, samurai and action in between. While all of Miyazaki’s films are amazing Princess Mononoke sits above the others and is hands down my favorite from the director.

2. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Yes I am from Portland and yes I love Wes Andersen. No I am not a hipster. Andersen is just a fantastic director who makes great movies and his first delve into animation is no exception. Fantastic Mr. Fox is Andersen’s take on the Roald Dahl original and is absolutely fantastic (pun intended). Andersen takes the already brilliant story and combines it with his quirky style, an amazing cast, and a stunning soundtrack into a cinematically stunning, feel good film. This charming, heartwarming and clever story is delivered perfectly by George Clooney, Bill Murray, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Willem Dafoe and Michael Gambon. While being a clay-mation movie it is still able to capture some shots that the cinematographer in me gets excited about such as the scene where Mr. Fox and his wife are talking with the water gushing past them in the background – gives me shivers every time. If there is one thing Wes Andersen does well, it’s style and style is definitely not lacking from this fantastically quirky film.

1. The Incredibles (2004)

I absolutely love this movie. So it’s clear that Pixar does animated movies well but with The Incredibles it showed the world hat it could also make an awesome and original super hero movie. Pixar created its own universe of super heroes and came out with its own movie that rivals most other super hero movies out there. The thing they do incredibly well is tell a sweet super hero story while at the same time presenting and telling a great family story. They blend the two together so well that neither side is weakened by the other producing an amazing super hero movie which just so happens to also be a great family film. While not being nearly as dark or gritty as the Watchmen, the story I have always felt was an inspiration to The Incredibles, it still has all of the action, super heroes, gadgets, and powers which makes the former and the rest of the genre so exciting, as well as being heart warming on top of it all. When asked about my favorite super hero movie a handful always come to mind that I have to decide between and The Incredibles is always among them. Not only is The Incredible a great animated movie, and not only is it a great super hero movie, it is just a straight up great movie. One of my all time favorites. With a sequel currently in the works I couldn’t be more excited.

So that is my list of my top 10 personal favorites. Sorry for the lack of variety but Pixar and Miyazaki are just the kings of the genre. Also I would like to apologize for the lack of any DreamWorks or Disney movies showing up on the list. Both are some of the top dogs as far as animated movies go but neither of them were able to compete with Studio Ghibli and Pixar and the others on the list, but admittedly How to Train Your Dragon, Beauty and the Beast, and Alice in Wonderland were all very close to making the list and just barely missed it.

So what are some of your guys’ favorites? Tell me about them as well as your own personal lists in the comments below or email ‘em to us at askpowercords@gmail.com!

The Saga of Biôrn

Like vikings? Dig animated short films? Then you’ll love The Saga of Biôrn!

The Saga of Biôrn is an animated short made by The Animation Workshop, a small independant studio from Denmark. The short was released in 2011, and can be watched for free on YouTube. Here’s a short synopsis of the flim from the official page:

Biôrn, an old Viking, is determined to reach Valhalla, the warrior’s afterlife full of excessive drinking and debauchery. To gain entry he has to die honorably in battle, but he discovers that the right death isn’t so easy.

As a Norse mythology and northern European history enthusiast, I absolutely love this short. It’s simple, funny, beautifully animated, and full of personality and charm that many feature-length films never achieve. Watch above, and tell us your thoughts in the comments!

7 Must-See Films of 2012

Hello readers! Please give a very warm welcome to our friend and newest addition to the pwrcords.com writing team, Marshal Ellison! For his first post, Marshal made up a list of films he is positive will rock your face in 2012. Be sure to comment, and be on the look-out for more articles from Marshal in the near future!

As of right now 2012 is looking like it is going to be a pretty phenomenal year for movies. The year is full of many long awaited sequels and prequels, as well as some

new films from great directors like Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill) and Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban). Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect.

Prometheus

Thirty years afte the release of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott finally ends his sci-fi hiatus and is returning to the genre with a prequel to the Alien movies [Ed. Note – Fuck. Yes.]. The film was originally going to be a direct prequel that led right into Alien, but instead ended up being more focused on the giant species killed by the “aliens” that the crew of the Nostromo discovered at the beginning of the original Alien.

Gravity

Anyone who saw Children of Men knows Alfonso Cuarón can do action, and he can do it with style. Gravity is set to have that same intense cinematography filled with long takes that made Children of Men so good. This apparently simple story about a pair of survivors from a repair mission, trying to get home has already received praise from director Guillermo Del Toro who said it will push “a new boundary of filmmaking”. Not much else is known at this point, other than it will star George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, will be in 3D, and the first twenty minutes are one long take.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I know I am not alone when I say that The Hobbit was always my favorite out of the Lord of the Rings series [Ed. Note – something everyone at pwrcords.com agrees on.]. Peter Jackson brings us back to Middle Earth with part one of The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey. Jackson is splitting the adventure into two parts to tell the story in full, leaving out as little as possible. Martin Freeman stars in the film, portraying Bilbo Baggins, and Ian McKellen returns once again taking on the role of Gandalf, amongst a highly promising cast.

The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight trilogy comes to its epic conclusion with Tom Hardy playing the villain, Bane, and Anne Hatheway appearing as Cat Woman. The first two Batman movies Christopher Nolan made are arguably some of the best super hero movies of all time, and based on his résumé stacked with other great films, I am sure it will not be a disappointment. Joeseph Gordon-Levitt joins the cast, as well as Liam Nieson once again playing the role of Ra’s Al Ghul, and of course, Christian Bale once again playing Bruce Wayne.

Django Unchained

Django Unchained is a film directed by Quentin Tarantino about a slave-turned-bounty-hunter and his trek across America in his journey to save his wife. While not an actual remake of the 1966 film Django, Tarantino did admit to be influenced by the film. With an all-star cast consisting of Leonardo DiCaprio, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Christoph Waltz, and Jamie Foxx and with all of Tarantino’s style this will be one you won’t want to miss

World War Z

Based on the novel by Max Brooks, World War Z is the story of a U.N. employee racing around the world in an attempt to stop the zombie pandemic. World War Z will have less of a George Romero feel and more of the intense action packed style of Children of Men. Based on the fact that director Marc Forster has a budget of $125 million to work with and the fact that reviews of the script all say it is great we might be looking at the next big zombie flick.

Iron Sky

Timo Vuorensola is directing Iron Sky, a film about Nazis launching an attack on Earth from their Moon base. Nazis invading Earth from their Moon base. Need I say more?

Thoughts on Chronicle

Pwrcords contributor Kyle recently went and saw the new film Chronicle. It’s a ‘found-footage’ super hero flick centered around a group of young guys with super abilities, definitely the kind of thing up the Pwrcords crew’s alley. After some thought on the movie, Kyle’s here to share his opinions on Chronicle: [Read more...]
