D3 Armory

If anyone out there is still playing Diablo 3, Blizzard just recently introduced a new feature to Diablo 3. Now it doesn’t directly influence your gaming experience. So if you left the game because you were bored with the gameplay then this update probably won’t matter to you at all.

This new update Blizzard gave Diablo is not even in game, it’s on battle.net. It’s a new feature on the website that allows you to look at your Diablo 3 characters. You are able to see just about everything about your character. You can see stats, dps, gear, spec, follower information, and how far you have progressed with that character.

Now I like the whole idea behind this because I like to see the different skill combinations people come up with and what stats they are stacking, and maybe give it a go. In other words it opens my eyes, such as playing your wizard as a tank instead of a squishy caster. On the flip side people might want to keep their builds secret and not want to share with the world their super-secret awesome build. In which case, they might want to make it an option whether or not you want to allow everyone to see your characters.

This update I feel won’t matter that much to the players who are in it for the story. I feel that this update will be a bigger part of the game once the pvp update comes out. Because I know if I was going mano a mano with another wizard and he beat me I would like to know what that players spec was and how geared they were.

Should you buy: Magic the Gathering: Online?

Are you big into play the Trading card game Magic the Gathering? Is making that awesome deck too expensive? Do you find yourself wanting to play a round of magic but no one is around? If you said yes to any of these questions then you might want to look into purchasing Magic The Gathering: Online.

Marshal (PowerCords Editor) was able to talk me into buying this game for $10 bucks and trying it out. At first I didn’t really enjoy playing the game because I couldn’t come up with a good deck idea to start me off with, but Marshal was quick to tell me about being able to buy/trade for cards at a cheap price. When he told me that, I pretty much fell in love with this game. I then took the opportunity to find my favorite magic deck that I had made in real life and see how much it would be to buy all the cards for it. The deck in real life cost me at least $50 bucks, but as I was picking out the virtual cards the total came to $10 bucks.

I made the deck and put it together after a little while of getting use to the menus. I was then ready to test out the deck. Marshal was the only one that had the game and he wasn’t on at the time so I opted to use the “Games” tab. There were a ton of people on making new games and joining others. So it was easy to find a game and test out my deck. Unfortunately I don’t think I won my first game because I played a red white agro deck that was too quick for me. That didn’t stop me I just went and jumped into a new game. Also I’m not that into it but if you are there is an option for tournaments and drafts you can get involved with.

The one thing that I would change about this game is the menu system. I’m not sure what it is about it but I found it hard to navigate and get used to. It was also a bit confusing trying to construct a deck in the deck maker they have. Even with having played magic for a few years now I still found it difficult to construct a brand new deck on here, my opinion is to go to a site such as tappedout.net to build a deck and then go buy the cards and play the deck on Magic Online.

Being able to buy cards really cheap and being able to play whenever you feel like it is so great. Like I said if you are into playing Magic the Gathering trading card game then you should give this game a go. Feel free to add me, Schieds, even though I am not on much at the time being because I am still enjoying Diablo 3.

I will be working on a deck list article in the next week or so, so all of you will have the pleasure of seeing my creation, and if you want to try it out or give suggestions.

Diablo III: Still Hacking and Looting, 2 Months in.

Diablo 3 was the fastest selling game of all time and it has been 2 months since it was released. I have logged in around 150 hours of play time. That’s not as much as some people have, but it is a good chunk of time. I have had a first-hand experience at a handful of good things and a plethora of bad things. This includes a few things such as; glitches, gear and the auction house, and lastly repetitiveness of the end game.

The day the game was released there were plenty of glitches that were game breaking. The first one that comes to mind is trading your equip shield with your Templars equipped shield, this would crash your game and not allow you to do anything that was one of the worst. Another glitch not as bad as the first but it would still be extremely difficult to overcome is in Act 4 if you skipped the cinematic leading into the Izual fight there was a chance to spawn 2 Izuals making the fight a lot harder than intended. I read that on multiple occasions that there would be an elite monster that would be un-killable. Due to its randomly chosen abilities it would be able to take so much damage and keep healing so that you couldn’t kill it. That one is a little easier to fix just leave and make a new game or simply run past him. There were also some glitches that weren’t harmful like during the boss fight Zultan Kulle you were able to trap him on one side of where the bridge would spawn and you could make it to the other side and he would be trapped there making it easy for you to use your range skills to kill him. The last glitch I wanted to mention in this article was my personal favorite; it was the wizards healing hydra glitch. Now I never got a chance to abuse this glitch but when I found out about it I was extremely bummed that they removed it because in all technicality the way the skills were worded it wasn’t a “glitch”. It worked by having a high amount of “life on kill” and just spamming your hydra. The game recognized that when you spawned a new hydra it “killed” the old hydra which was 3 individual hydra heads therefore healing you for 3 times the amount of your “life on kill” (These are all the glitches I am going to cover in this article but if you want more let me know down below in the comments.)

Now to touch a bit on gear drops, and the Auction House (AH). This game is supposed to be about grinding to find the best gear, which it is, but if the best gear in the game has an extremely low drop rate and no one wants to spend days upon days to farm for it they will just farm for gold. Farming for gold allows the players to just buy the best gear in the game from other players off the AH. Now don’t get me wrong I love the AH and what it allows players to do but if you take away the “end game” players are going to get bored and stop playing. I have seen this first hand, during the first few weeks of launch there were tons of players online and when I log in nowadays all I hear in the chat rooms are crickets. Now I can’t say I’m not going to use the AH because I already have and I love it, but I am going to use it with caution. I am not going to buy best in slot items for my characters because it gives me nothing to do if I want to play the game. Unlike Diablo 2 where even if you had the best gear in the game you could always level a new character with a different spec.

If players are even more lazy and don’t want to farm for anything they can just spend their hard earned money in the Real Money Auction House (RMAH). The RMAH is a bit outrages right now with prices for a single items at $250 bucks. I don’t know a single person that would spend $250 on a single virtual item. If you wanted to spend world money to buy in game items than be my guest, but to be completely honest I think that Blizzard should only allow players to spend real world money on various amounts of gold and scrap buying items. Even though you would still technically be able to buy items with the gold you spent real world money on .This will make it so that the AH isn’t spread between 2 different Auction Houses and all the focus would be on just the one AH. This would mean finding a specific item would be much easier and that there would be competition for similar items making it so people would undercut each other and prices wouldn’t be outrageous.

Wizard Tank Spec

I touched just a tad on this but I wanted to say a few more words about Diablo 3’s “End Game”. Diablo as a game has never had a true end game. It was all about farming for hours either to get that perfect item that had perfect maxed stats or grinding to make it to level 99. Well since the level cap is set to 60 that was easy to achieve. The only real end game in D3 is to grind gear. We all knew that going into the game but I think we were also all hoping for it to be more entertaining because I seem to be hearing a lot of complaining about it being repetitive and boring. If you are getting bored with the game start toying with your spec. I am just now looking into playing my wizard as a tank and not a glass cannon and it has sparked a new interest in the game for me, because I have to go through the gear grind again since I need different stats than what my glass cannon spec needs.

I think in my personal opinion even with all the flaws and fixes that are going on I am really enjoying the game how it is. Yes it could be a bit more polished and more of an objective for an end game but I love it just the way it is. I feel like I am playing Diablo.

Path of Exile Beta!

So for the past month or so I have been putting a good chunk of time into Path of Exile. Path of exile is an action role playing game under development by Grinding Gear Games from New Zealand.  Path of Exile is currently in its Beta stage and handing out beta keys to random members every few minutes. They are hoping to be in open Beta soon and then looking to release the game. The game is going to be completely free which is great, it gives people no reason not to at least try it out.

The most interesting things about the game to me are the skill and stat systems they use. There are only 3 different stats; Strength, Intelligence and Dexterity. Each class uses a different combination of these stats and can go a different way in the Passive Skill Tree.

This is only part of the Passive Skill Tree

The way the skill system works is even more interesting. None of the classes have any skills. That sounds weird but the way you have skills is by picking up skill gems and placing them in open slots in your gear. These gems are found from killing monsters or by completing quests. There different style of gems; red, blue and green. Each color represents a stat. Red revolves around strength, blue around intelligence and green for dexterity. They way your skills get stronger is by using them and gaining experience with them. Once the skill gems get higher level they start requiring higher stats based on what the skill is. For example this Fireball skill Gem picture.

Path of Exile is a great game and a ton of fun. I am going to keep playing the beta and continue playing the game once it is officially released. Since the game is going to be completely free I strongly urge everyone to give the game a chance. The only thing this game is going to take from you is time and it is time well spent.

Unfortunately I don’t have a way to capture game play for you all, you can just youtube it. Also here is a link to the pathofxile website I advise you to just take a look.

The long awaited moment is here; Diablo 3 has a release date!

Diablo 3 has just been officially given a release date: May 15th, 2012.

I knew the game was going to be dropping in the coming months but I had no idea when. I woke up this morning and got ready to go to class. I had some time to kill before I had to leave, so I went ahead and checked my email and facebook when I was hit with the news. Diablo 3 Launching May 15. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought it was going to be just another rumor but I went ahead and clicked on the link http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/4612389/Diablo_III_Launching_May_15_%E2%80%93_Digital_Pre-Sales_NOW_OPEN-3_15_2012  and there it was Battle.net approved.  As I am writing this for the powercords website I am downloading the D3 client to my computer so as soon as the servers go live on May 15 at 12:01 I will be playing it. I am still unsure what character I want to play as my “main” but as of right now I am leaning towards either the Demon Hunter or the Wizard.

My question to you fans out there: what is going to be the first character you play as?

Thoughts on Chronicle

Pwrcords contributor Kyle recently went and saw the new film Chronicle. It’s a ‘found-footage’ super hero flick centered around a group of young guys with super abilities, definitely the kind of thing up the Pwrcords crew’s alley. After some thought on the movie, Kyle’s here to share his opinions on Chronicle: [Read more...]

Ruminating on Diablo 3′s release date

by Kyle

With all this recent news surrounding Blizzard’s upcoming Diablo 3 in the past few weeks, yet still no confirmed release date, fans have been looking for any clues as to when to expect this long-awaited sequel. Kyle takes a look:

There’s been a lot of talk in the gaming community lately about the release date of Diablo 3. The game has never had an official release date, but some recent events have caused rumors to spread about an immenint release.

Diablo 3 was supposed to be released sometime late 2011, with people speculating it would be around Christmas. Then Bashiok (aka, Micah Whiple, Blizzard’s Diablo 3 community manager) came out and announced that we wouldn’t see D3 until at least the first quarter of 2012. To me this was no big deal; I actually applaud Blizzard for holding their game back and making sure it is perfect, unlike others who would rather the game just come out and patch it later.
